Peaks #5 and #6 – Give Me More Scree

Stretching. Simple concept that really does help.

After yesterdays peaks I did some good stretching late afternoon / evening and I was stoked to have woken up with my legs feeling pretty fresh. That being said, I should wait until I start heading up a hill to really see how they are holding up.

It was another stunning day in Canterbury and the drive to Lake Lyndon came and went. Parking at the bottom of the spur I intended walking up made me double check I was going the right way. This thing looked steep, and I was right.

Fortunately, a few people had gone up this way before me so there was a, albeit average, trail going up along the spur. Around the 1,110 metre mark I started clambering up through some chunky scree. This part was relentless but a head down bum up approach made it tick along and I was at the ridge before I knew it.

From here there was a nice meander along the tops to the summit of Mt Lyndon, an honest 1,489 metres above sea.

The photo shoot took place but a cool breeze coming from the south-west made the stay short. It was time to start my scree sliding!

With my legs still feeling relatively good I made for a fast time down to the scree. It was a bloody fun jumping and sliding down. You had to work for it so next time I’ll aim for a peak a little steeper so there is less effort involved! (sorry mum).

Back at the car where it was time to have a feed and replenish the water levels.

Meindl boots and Hunters Element gaiters in their element.

Next on the list was Trig M. I took the easiest option for this and began my walk from Starvation Gully which turned the walk into a nice fast paced affair.

Most of the way along you are on 4wd tracks which definitely does not make for the most exciting of times, especially when last I was up here was ankle deep snow! I made good time along the track and got to the top only to be greeted with some gloomy looking clouds out over Lake Coleridge and the Rakaia. Safe to say the weather forecasts were pretty accurate.

I took the time to have a seat and some food despite the rain being carried on the winds that were strengthening. You often can’t go past a good home made bacon and egg pie for lunch.

Short lived break at the top thanks to the approaching rain

With the winds developing I began my walk back to the car. Timing was to perfection with after taking the boots off and having some food, the skies opened up. I was almost upset that I didn’t have to get my Stoney Creek rain jacket out. Almost.

Another couple ticked off and put aside for a bit of a buffer.

#5 Mt Lyndon – 1,489m, 4.51km, 1 Hour 30 Min

#6 Trig M – 1,251m, 6.55km, 1 Hour 25 Min

Weather could play a part on where I head to next so fingers crossed!
